How a strategy runs

The parts of a strategy, the order in which the bot runs them, and the tier each part needs.

A strategy tells a Spinner's bot when to buy, what to buy, and when to sell. It is a short JSON document that the engine checks before you can save it. Spin's servers then run it from the Spinner's own wallet.

You edit a strategy on the Strategy tab of your Spinner. You can edit it as a workflow of blocks or as JSON. Both tabs edit the same strategy. Read the workflow editor to learn how.

A Spinner runs one strategy at a time: the version you saved last. Read versions to learn how saving works.

The order of the parts

Each time something happens that the strategy listens for, the bot starts an entry check. The check goes through these parts in order. If one part stops the check, the bot does not buy.

OrderBlock in the workflowJSONWhat it does
1Whenentry.triggerStarts the check: a launch, a trade, a timer or a webhook call.
2Buy only ifentry.ifA condition checked at once. No condition: every check goes on.
3LimitslimitsThe bot checks its limits (open positions, entries an hour, once per token).
4Wait (optional)entry.wait_sThe check waits this many seconds (at most 3600).
5AI steps (optional)entry.aiUp to 3 questions to your own AI model, one after the other.
6Then buy if or After the wait, buy ifentry.confirmA condition on the AI's answers, or on the market after the wait.
7Buy or Launchentry.buy_eth or entry.launchThe bot buys a token, or launches a new one.
8Sell rulesexitsUp to 10 sell rules, checked on every price change and every second.

The Limits block also holds limits that apply over the whole strategy, such as how many positions can be open at the same time. Read limits.

The check in step 6 is only there when the strategy has a wait or AI steps. AI steps always need it, because their answers only matter through a rule.

The parts in short

  • Triggers: what starts an entry check.
  • Conditions: the rules in Buy only if, Then buy if and the sell rules, and every value they can read.
  • Buying: what the bot buys, where, how much, and with how much slippage.
  • Exits: when and how much the bot sells.
  • Limits: the limits over the whole strategy, with their defaults.
  • AI steps: questions to your own AI model before a buy or a sell.
  • Launching: a strategy can launch a new token instead of buying one.

The tier a strategy needs

Each Spinner has a tier of tools. A strategy can only run when the Spinner has the tier it needs. The editor shows the tier under the strategy, for example "Needs Rare tools; this Spinner has Epic."

The strategy usesTier it needs
A preset exactly as made: a DCA of a listed token every 6 hours or once a day (any amount), copy wallets, or launch momentumCommon
A preset with its numbers changed, or a DCA of any token at any intervalUncommon
Any other strategy built from rules, without AIRare
AI steps only to write a token launch, without MCP serversRare
AI steps in an entry (other than a launch) or in an exit, or MCP servers anywhereEpic
A webhook triggerLegendary

The strategy's name is free to change at every tier. If a strategy needs a higher tier than the Spinner has, you cannot save it. Read rarity and tiers to learn how a Spinner gets its tier.

Paper and live

A bot trades on paper until you turn on live trading. On paper, the bot makes the same decisions, and Spin records the fills it would have got from the market at that moment, with the 0.5% bot fee and gas. No funds move. When you turn on live trading, the bot trades with real ETH from the Spinner's wallet, within the limits that you set on chain. Read live trading.

Rules are not advice

A strategy does exactly what its rules say, good or bad. Presets are starting points, and a good backtest does not mean that a strategy will make money. Keep amounts small.
